Palos Verdes Estates is an elite city in the South Bay area of the County of Los Angeles. Incorporated in the year 1939, the city was planned and designed by the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. Palos Verdes Estates lies along the western coast of the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by other cities of the County of Los Angeles. Redondo Beach lies to the north of Palos Verdes Estates while Rancho Palos Verdes lies to the south and southeast. Rolling Hills is to the east and Rolling Hills Estates is to the northeast.
Palos Verdes Estates is one of the more costly cities in the USA. However, it is one of the best places to live. Palos Verdes spans across 4.73 sq. miles and has an estimated population of 13,680. It is one of the least densely populated cities from the standpoint of the County of Los Angeles as well as the South Bay area.
Palos Verdes Estates enjoys a mild and pleasant Mediterranean climate given its proximity to the ocean. The temperature usually stays between 78 degrees F. and 50 degrees F. all through the year. The rainfall is scanty. However, it rains more during the winter than it does during the summer. The city, like most other cities in the South Bay, is sunny for most days of the year.
Palos Verdes Estates is served by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. There are 3 elementary schools, 1 high school and 1 middle school in the city, all of which are public schools. There is a private school as well; The Coastline High School. The Palos Verdes Peninsula High School is under the same school district but located in Rolling Hills Estates. It is ranked as the 8th best school in the country.
Palos Verdes is an affluent city with most people belonging to the high-income group. Sales and office administration forms the largest segment of Palos Verdes’ job market, followed by management and financial services. The healthcare segment ranks third and the engineering industry is the fourth largest source of employment. A small percentage of people are engaged in law enforcement, professional services, arts and entertainment.
The city has several coves, some of which were used to film the parts of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. Sportspersons like Matt Barnes, and Anderson Silva have shared an association with Palos Verdes Estates. The same goes for musician Gary Wright, game developing and designing genius Shigeru Miyamoto, and neuroscientist/author/musician Daniel Levitin.
